MAAN MACAPAGAL

Maan is one of the more credible correspondents of the country’s largest TV network ABS-CBN. One of the highlights in her career was when the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf kidnapped her back in 2000 while working as a researcher and writer on location with cameraman Val Cuenca in Jolo, Sulu. They became captive in the group’s jungle camp for one-week. Since then, her name became familiar to news and public affairs scene as she became a regular reporter in ABS-CBN.

The incident in Sulu became the “claim to fame” for Maan as she was noted for her courage and dedication in her profession as a journalist.

Truly, this simple yet brave PUP alumna is the manifestation of the courage and dedication of a true-blooded PUPian. Her being a dedicated campus journalist back in her college days made her what she is today.

DENILLE LOU VALMONTE

This 24-year-old stunner is the reigning Binibining Pilipinas- International 2006. She is a graduate of BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Her triumph in the world of beauty contests serves as an inspiration for every PUPian as she became the model of beauty and brains combined.

Another major event she attended was when she represented the country in the Miss International Beauty pageant 2006 in China. Though she came home without the crown, she still carried the honor of representing the country with the grace and glamour of a true Filipina.

Before joining the Binibing Pilipinas, she competed in various beauty and modeling competition in both local and national level.

TED FAILON

Does the name Ted Failon ring a bell? You might even say, “That guy in TV Patrol?” Yes, you’re right. And if you still don’t know, Ted Failon is a PUPian, standing proud in front of PUP pylon. He graduated in 1996 with a degree of Bachelor in Broadcasting Communication.

From 1990-2001, he worked as a Feb-Anchor, Executive Producer of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation and Columnist of Isyu. And he broadcast for Balita, Diyaryo Patrol and Saksi Ngayon.

He was once a member of the House of Representative in one of the four districts of Leyte. He later chose not to run for reelection, “picking media over politics” after finishing his first term in the plenary. Today, Ted Failon anchors for TV PATROL WORLD every weeknights and does a radio program with Korina Sanchez, in Tambalang Failon at Sanchez, air at DZMM Sais-Trenta! (630).

RICHARD GOMEZ

In the pre-Richard Gutierrez era, the name Richard evokes tall, dark and handsome specie of a man. Such was the charm of Richard Gomez—sporty, fearless and very masculine. PUPians could never have imagined him walking down Mabini Campus, but he did! He is an alumnus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines! Could you imagine that?

No doubt, that Richard Gomez is a notable actor, having won GAWAD URIAN Best Actor three times! He is probably one who held the title for Philippine’s Most Eligible Bachelor longest. Now married to Lucy Torres, Richard is one of the most celebrated actors and matinee idols in Philippine Cinema. Richard also excels in sports and is in fact a medalist in various sporting events. He is also now into politics heading “Mamamayang Ayaw sa Droga”, an organization that won seats in the party-list elections but was later disqualified.

Richard Gomez does a hosting job for S-Files aired in GMA-7. He remains active in numerous sports, and in the acting arena portraying even a villain in recently-concluded Captain Barbel, showcasing his thespian versatility.

(PUPians through times)

Freshies (n: people who are excited, nagpapanggap pa, adjusting to the new realm, burning with curiosity)

Unang araw ng eskwela, bitbit mo ang payo ni mommie, bilin ni daddie, kiss ni nannie, at ang mga bagong gamit, na matagal mo ng naihanda dahil sa hindi maitagong EXCITEMENT, calej boy/gurl kna [this is it!]Admitted kna sa R18 movies [hmmmmp, don’t think too GREEn-it only means that you’re matured enough to understand such things and learn to appreciate it with sound judgment], malaki na ang allowance at higit sa lahat hindi ka na maxado ma-momonitor ni mommie/daddie and nannie [start of independence, not rebelling].

First day high, first punk siempre, a lot of firsts, d2 ka mabibinyagan ulet. First time mong pumila na mas mahaba pa sa pila ng NFA rice distribution, ma-meet sa personal ang local version of Tom Hanks’ polar express [chchchcuuu train]. The age-old PNR trains ang una mong kelangang pagtiisan bago makarating sa gate, at least you have a crack at HISTORY, take this [“Philippine National Railways was first established in 1892, six years before the declaration of Philippine independence] courtesy of http://wikipedia.com.

First in the Philippines, ang canteen right beside your toilet, loading and unloading [excuse me po!!!!!] Xempre pa ang WHITE HAUS, ang pinagpipitagang Ninoy Aquino Learning Resource Center (library), considered as the Asia’s biggest in size, yet poorest in facilities, books, references etc. sa madalit sabi sagana sa laki. Skul-bahay-laybrari-bahay, ring a bell?

Sabi nga use your first time as a learning experience, habang tumatagal, you’ll learn the trick—dedma. Speaking of dedma, you’ll never fail to notice ang mala-dumpsite sa sobrang crowded na CATWALK sa dami ng naka-post, mga tiratirang papel, staple wires, natuyong paste. Mula sa “NO to US Imperialism” vandal hanggang sa “Join our club announcements” name it, you’ll get it, meron ding birthday, anniversary, monthsari greetings at lahat ng okasyon. Anjan din, makakmit ka ng txtm8s, EB’s at mga nakapost na #’s, that’s how friendly the students are. The biggest of all ang pamosong adjustment period, parang ung naramdaman mo ng una kang dalawin (for the girls) o yung first time mong bininyagan (sa mga boys). Kaniakania. Sa labas plang, maganda ng training ground, along teresa street, kaniakaniang tago ng CP, necklace, bracelets and other jewelries, dahil maraming beasts (snatchers, pickpockets), BEWARE! Takot mang maituturing ang mge freshies natin, aba, aba! Being scared and conscious are virtues pala, kasi most our freshies nagiging responsible at well behaved students kasi nga mga takot pa..

2nd year (immune, gutsy, improvement)

Sa ikalawang taong pamamalagi, xiempre, kahit papaano eh, you’ve mastered the TRICk that I was referring to. At ang WINNER sa lahat, maghihintay ng kakilala sa gate at kokontratahin na sa registration card at ID, kasi there is a policy that if you don’t have your ID with you, you can use your registration card at pagnakapasok na ang kasabwat iaabot ang ID at magpapanggap na ID nia yun. WAIS, that’s what you call determination and ingenuity. Gutsy na, c tutoy at ineng. Pagpasok sa room, lapag lang ng gamit at tambay agad sa koridor at sisimulan na ang fave pastime of all time—chixmaxx to the maxx. Reason behind? is the famous “Learning is not confined within the walls of classrooms” adage, oh san kpa. Anjan ang all-time fave refillable lugaw @ php6. low-rate internet café’s and shops. Gimikan, centerpoint, SM manila, pwede narin Greenhills at cubao. Mejo nag-iiba narin ang gusto mo sa fashion (courtesy of UK and DIVI), you learn to be practical, kaya mas humahanap ka ng mas mura. E2 ang panahong mejo relaxed pa sa scul kc most of the subject are just minor disciplines.

3rd year and 4th year. (tigas-ulo, master of all trades, parenthood, jobseekers)

Claim nmn ng iba, hindi na tayo highschool, a pen is enough. Gone were the days when notebooks and pens
(pencil case) are your buddies. Ngaun, UTAkan nlang yan. Not to mention ang mga overstaying, overtime students that for them 6years of staying here won’t suffice. Imbes na nsa clasrums eh mas trip pa ang mag-walkout straight to the streets of mendiola, C.RECTO, legarda and QUIAPO. Ala taung magagawa sabi nga ni KYLA “it’s human nature” sadyang mapagmahal tau, love conquers all ika nga. Pera wag ka since namaster na nga ang art of DEDMA, kahit preggie na at lobonglobo na ang tiyan, “the HELL I care” pasok parin aq, to get my diploma—that’s determination and appropriate stubbornness. That proves the point, that students today are grounded to their goals, despite the circumstances (walang pera, buntis, ayaw pag-aralin ng parents, working etc).

The Whiz minds of Peyups, the Champions of prestigious National Quiz Bee, The Board Passers, that make all of the hardship of PUPians worthy, The Young Leaders, who prove that PUP is a training ground for future leaders, The Artist, na nagpakita ng talento ng PUP sa buong bansa. Patok na patok din na produkto ng Peyups and mga professional and skilled workers.

Pride or Fried chicken?

Thinking about fast foods? Nah, we know you’re smart. You must have seen one of their posters with PUPoy, our Sintang Paaralan’s Centennial Mascot smiling wide and crazy. But what exactly is he smiling about? Well, PUPoy has every reason to rejoice. Finally, we’re seeing action for the PUPian Pride!

The PUP Young Leaders Forum
The PUP Young Leaders Forum (PUP YLF) is the brain child of the Ayala Young Leaders of
PUP, who initiated the program as part of their “continuing advocacy in the name of servant leadership.” The Forum aims to awaken the sense of true, dynamic, and responsible student leadership, establish lasting network of PUP student leaders, form corroborative decision-making and critical analyses of concerns via resolution and charter building, bring forth PUP student leaders and major players and experts into a proper forum of discussion and interaction and perform ways to fulfill the commitment in the signed charter to contribute in the development of each participant in the forum.

PUPoy in You
PUPoy in You?, the first of the three fora, was held at the College of Communication Audio-Visual Room last 28th of November 2007. It was hosted by students from the College of Communication.

Speakers

The participants, who were asked to submit a brief essay on What is PUPian Pride for admission, readily shared their views and perspective on various issues that boggles the PUPian, the forum revolved on the issue of PUPian Pride, and the PUPian identity. The participants readily shared their views and perspective on various issues that boggles the PUPian with questions ranging from ‘What sets a PUPian apart?’ to the much-discussed ‘Dapat bang ikahiya kung sa public school ka galling?’

pupoy-in-you-delegates-speakers-and-working-committee.jpg

To help the 24 participants present at the Forum, the PUP YLF had invited three resource speakers. Bro. Eng Si from the Kerygma Family, Mr. Ringo ‘Mr. Universe’ Borlain and MS. Kym Oliveros,a freshman from the College of Accountancy, who started a forum on Bob Ong’s Bobong Pinoy E-group, ‘Dapat bang ikahiya kung galling ka sa public school?

Bro. Eng Si and Mr. Borlain shared their experience as alumni of PUP, and the hassles and bustles that they faced inside and outside the campus, and gave interesting advices. “Commit to excellence” press Bro. Eng Si who is proud of his PUPian heritage. While Mr. Borlain recounts how he landed his current job as a Physical Education at the College of St. Benilde. He told the participants, “Other may have all the brains, all the money, but at the end of the day, it is the PUP graduate that delivers and gets the job done.” Ms. Kym Oliveros gave the perspective of still struggling freshman who wonders what to do with the stigma people have on PUPians. At the end of the forum, the participants were given graphic of PUPoy and were ask to color the black-and-white poster. Each one scribbled a few lines of what really is a PUPian Pride.

The Environment and Culture
PUP YLF has two more forums scheduled for this school year, Tapat Ko, Linis Ko,’ The PUP Young Leaders Forum on Environment and Energy Conservation to be held onJ23rd of January, 2008, at the Engineering and Architecture Building Audio-Visual Room, hosted by the College of Engineering. The third one is KultuROCK!,’, The PUP Young Leaders Forum on Culture and Arts Revolution this coming March 5, 2008, at the Claro M. Recto Auditorium
.
