PUPians PROTEST AS BOR PROPOSE TFI

PUP, Sta. Mesa— At around eleven o’clock noon, the PUP student population was stunned with the announcement of the existence of a proposal to increase the tuition fee from twelve peso unit to seventy-five pesos per unit. Mr. Henry Enaje, student representative to the Board of Regent related the news which prompted the activists to noise barrage in a condemnation of the proposal. The Board of regents is scheduled to conduct a meeting at two o’clock this Tuesday afternoon, August 14, 2007. However, there is no official announcement from the Board of Regents which neither confirms nor denies the existence of such proposal which allegedly was a last minute inclusion to the agenda of the BOR meeting at the Commission on Higher Education Office.

It is not known whether the BOR had conducted a research study on the socio-economic demographics of PUP student. A research on the economic profile would show whether the Tuition Fee Increase(TFI) is justifiable and feasible with a student population majority of whom are assumed to be belonging the economically marginalized class. Currently, the tuition fee is pegged at twelve pesos per unit (Php 12/unit). If the tuition fee increase is approved, a PUP student with regular load of eighteen(18) units would have to pay Php1, 350 for tuition fee exclusive of other university fee. An increase to Php 75 per unit would be 525% more than the present rate. The University of the Philippines had recently increased its tuition fee by 300% more. If the increase is approved, PUP would surpass UP increase percentage by one-hundred twenty five percent (125 %).
