The PUP Young Leaders Forum
The PUP Young Leaders Forum (PUP YLF) is the brain child of the Ayala Young Leaders of PUP, who initiated the program as part of their “continuing advocacy in the name of servant leadership.” The Forum aims to awaken the sense of true, dynamic, and responsible student leadership, establish lasting network of PUP student leaders, form corroborative decision-making and critical analyses of concerns via resolution and charter building, bring forth PUP student leaders and major players and experts into a proper forum of discussion and interaction and perform ways to fulfill the commitment in the signed charter to contribute in the development of each participant in the forum.

PUPoy in You
PUPoy in You?, the first of the three fora, was held at the College of Communication Audio-Visual Room last 28^th of November 2007. It was hosted by students from the College of Communication.

The participants, who were asked to submit a brief essay on What is PUPian Pride for admission, readily shared their views and perspective on various issues that boggles the PUPian, the forum revolved on the issue of PUPian Pride, and the PUPian identity. The participants readily shared their views and perspective on various issues that boggles the PUPian with questions ranging from ‘What sets a PUPian apart?’ to the much-discussed ‘Dapat bang ikahiya kung sa public school ka galling?’

Our fellow PUPian Richard Librada and Darlene Abigail Quito garnered the top honors, together with Roman Perez of University of the Philippines at the prestigious music video award ceremony broadcasted live last 25^th of November, Sunday at the UP Theatre in Diliman, Quezon City.

Quito received the Best Video Editing and Texter’s Choice

Darlene Abigail Quito received the Best Video Editing and Texter’s Choice awards for her work on the Yasmien Kurdi music video of “Candlelight Romance”. While Roman Perez, also a student from the University of the Philippines bagged the Best Production Design award for the music video of Aicelle Santos’ “Ikaw Pa Rin”.

Wait, there’s more. Eighteen-years old Richard Librada and his team behind the “All Out of Love” music video, rendered by actor-singer Dennis Trillo got away with the most awards. Sophomore Librado, and his team from the College of Communication at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines went home with Best Videography, Best Concept/Story, Best Music Video, and Best Director. Dennis Trillo, the star of the video, earned the Special Citation for Best Performance by An Artist for his thespian prowess in “All Out of Love”.

All in all, team PUP brought home a total of eight award. Other finalist were. Elaine Melody Samonte (St. Paul College, QC), Ademar Garchitorena (University of San Jose Recoletos, Cebu), Maan Leynes (Centro Escolar University), and Nestor Abrogena (UP Diliman).

In a press release from SOP Music Video Awards, the management stated that:

“For four years now, SOP Music Awards has become the venue in recognizing exceptional talents of Filipinos and acknowledge remarkable artists and significant performances that uplifts the quality and standards of Original Pilipino Music (OPM).This year, SOP Music Awards, through SOP Music Video Awards, has fulfilled its goal in discovering young aspiring music video directors from different university and colleges all over the country.”

Discovered indeed. Richard Librada and Darlene Abigail Quito showed the country that PUPians Rock!

Among the Top 20, eleven schools came from Luzon, two from the Visayas and seven from Mindanao. Six of these schools are state universities, and yes! You guessed it right, our school is one of them. Now that’s Astig!

“Engineering the Human Soul…”

Truly, the Spectrum’s popular catchphrase carries a colorful meaning. The PUP College of Engineering does not only teach their students how to construct structures of sophisticated magnificence but also build the edifice of pride and excellence into their hearts and minds.

The Spectrum offers these future engineers an instrument to share their thoughts and ideals and at the same time, to inform their fellow CEAns and PUPians of the hottest updates in and out of the campus. The college publication welcomes every CEAn to a world of letters in a dimension where numbers rule their lives.

Content

The Spectrum articles encompass and reflect the different realities of human life. These can be divided into the social, cultural, political, technological and scientific aspects. Articles about the bitter consequences of poverty in the lives of a PUP student and common people are the best examples of social realities exposed in their articles. Cultural calls for the preservation of Filipino traditions and customs as well as the historic places in the Philippines. Then, the political area comes up largely on the Opinion section of the newspaper where CEAns are free to speak and comment about our national leaders and the role of the youth state affairs. Finally, the technological and scientific aspect, which carries essential and the interesting part for the CEAns for this part, reveals their specialization and expertise.

The Spectrum topics concern the individual CEAn, to the college, the university up to the national issues. The newspaper tells the typical even the most unusual stories of the engineering students of their 5-year stint in the campus. In that case, serves as a venue for CEAns to share their experiences and ideologies. More than that, it serves as an instrument of communication to air the grievances of the CEAns for the College and University administration to be heard and at the same time to inform other PUPians of their accomplishments. At the national level, CEAns stay foot of the latest updates while having the opportunity to speak out of their views an suggestions regarding the most recent issues.

The Spectrum maintains its uniqueness and sets the trend when it comes to campus publication. One of these unique variation is coming up with a “Circle” page. This section make up the “barkada and gimmick” section of the paper. Here we can read and see band gigs inside the campus, students’ “trips”, and some other cool and fun stuffs.
